So, the vacation continues. We have added a halibut trip and a gold panning/camping trip to the list of things accomplished. Things were delayed by me getting the worst ear infection of my life.  A Z pack fixed me right up.  We've had a lot of fun this first week and have a few things left to do.  Yesterday we went up Palmer Creek Road but it was pointed out to me that that valley is full of mining tailings.  Not a lot of gold left.  We did have good luck halibut fishing but I missed the gaff of a fish that was every bit of 80 lbs.  Agh.  I hurt my my hand goofing off with the black bear last week and I just slipped.  What made it worse was that I took the gaff from G so that he didn't miss.  I'm amazed at how much we have packed into a week.  J and the girls will be home from England next week and I am looking forward to seeing them.  Time to settle in and watch a little Lord of the Rings....vacationing can be tiring!

So, summer vacation 2011.  I can't remember ever taking 2 weeks off in a row before. G is up from California with a buddy and his 14 year old kid. Yesterday was our first day. We spent the day out at Tustumena. God I am going to miss that place when the boat goes in a few weeks. So far we have ate bacon twice in
a day (including in my salmon BLT's), shot guns, watched a black bear swim across a river and come RIGHT at us, panned for gold, dipnetted, watched salmon spawn, drank whiskey, played X-box, hiked to a glacier and gone for a Rhino ride. Tomorrow we are going gold panning and halibut fishing. We are going to camp overnight.  I am amazed at how much we have packed into a few days.  I am hoping to get my fill now for several reasons: first, it is great to have guys to do things with.  Second, the boat goes in a few weeks.  Third, I don't know what the future holds and where I will be this time next year.  So stay tuned...

So, the last few weeks have been busy.  As it stands right now I am sitting here alone at almost 2 am having a drink of whiskey.  Just came back from dipnetting and had to process 58 fish.  Alaska's bounty is pretty crazy.  I learned that last week when we caught too many halibut.  I got popped by the Troopers, and despite being cooperative, being over limit in Alaska is a A misdemeanor.  My first 'crime'.  I have retained counsel and am hoping to plead it down to a violation.  Let me tell you, I was awfully careful tonight.  It's just too easy to get swept away with the fish and lose count.  It's sloppy but easy to do. The only upside to that stressful event was I found the most amazing halibut hole that is close to an amazing place to camp. I will go back when G gets here and get some more fish.  Funny...all the times I went out and never caught anything... Dipnetting was the usual shit show but once a few of the folks cleared out it was as amazing as always. One…

So, Tustumena glacier. Truly one of my favorite spots on this earth.  Last year the interns and I figured out how to get up there.  This year I returned with Sean, the only intern who is interested in such things.  A few other people told me they were going and flaked out after I bought the food.  Oh well.  The boat ran like a champ and only burned 6.3 GPH.  That may not sound very exciting to you but wow!  Flying across the lake at 35 MPH for 6.3 GPH is pretty darned cool.  For laughs, I took up my chef's whites.  Cooked a meal fit for a king.  Scallops in butter and garlic.  Caesar salad.  Ribeye steaks, roast corn and bakes potatoes.  Crown Royal on 10,000 year old ice.  If I may say so, the meal was amazing, even though I got stuck with a food bill for people who flaked.  I hope the glacier lasts long to show my kids, assuming I am still in the area.  I like it so much because so few people have ever been there.  Anyways, an amazing trip in an amazing place.  Didn't see a…

So, happy birthday to me. 38. Wow. Only two more years until I am 40! To celebrate I am going up to Tustumena glacier tomorrow. I have a very special meal planned. Otherwise the summer is proceeding. I went dipnetting for the first time. Didn't catch anything (got the tide wrong) but the girls were happy. I'm not too worried..the reds will be here soon and we will fill the freezer. A few folks are coming over tonight for fish and chips. Otherwise not much is new. I am looking forward to a few weeks "alone". I love the girls but a few weeks in the summer to fish and drink and just do what I want sounds good. J and I have been fighting about that...she thinks I am wrong for feeling that way. Anyways...the first guest has arrived.
