So, winter arrived over the night. The first real snow of the year. Now we settle in for 6 months. Talk about timing. I just had the money to put the snows tires on. Last night, Bill and I finished clearing off some firewood from a 5 acre lot. The freezers are full. Time to cook and read. For my winter reading, I have started the History of WWII by Winston Churchill. I love how Americans always think they won that war on their own. It was Churchill who made that victory happen...."We know it will be hard; we expect it to be long, we cannot predict or measure its episodes or its tribulations. But one thing is certain, one thing is sure, one thing stands out stark and undeniable, massive and unassailable for all the world to see. We cannot see how deliverance will come or when it will come, but nothing is more certain that every trace of Hitler's footsteps, every stain of his infected, corroding fingers will be sponged and purged and, if need be, blasted from the surface of the earth". What a man. I often turn to him when this job gets to be too much. In other news, Sasha is home and doing great. Winter time.....

We didn't win it on our own. I have never heard an American say that. 291,577 combat deaths, 405,399 wounded, your welcome. By the way, the pacific theater was almost an exclusive American operation. The British were in Burma and a few other places but it was our Marines who died horrible deaths taking the beaches so that the air war could be brought to Japan. The war would have surely been lost if not for the grace of God and America doing his will.
But the British suffered more combat deaths. And what about the Russians? Americans always portray WWII as something they won by themselves...they may not say it but then they may....

I agree. The Canadians lost 92000. The British 400,000. It's just you sounded like you were belittling the sacrifices the US made.

On this next Veterans Day please re-read your history along with a remedial math lesson. Brits like to count the dead Irish in their numbers but the Irish were not, and will not be Brits. BTW you can still signup for active duty at any local rercuiter office.
No, not minimizing it all all. But it was just that the Americans came in relatively late. Until the summer of 1944 the British had more active divisions than the Americans fighting. I think the real contribution before that was in materials.

World War Two was not just in Europe. Read “The Thousand Mile War”, for a little Alaskan flavor. I don’t think Canada would teach history of WW2, not their finest hour. Some of the “commie Canadians” from B.C. did not want to go to Alaska. See “Terrace Mutiny”. Having lost family in WWII and having the heritage of being a Vet, the son of a Vet and a understanding of war, I proudly say GFY, and enjoy Veterans Day..
Didn't I ban you? But since you "understand" war so much, one would think that some basic research would be done before making such bold statements. So, instead of deleting your comment, I will use your ignorance to educate. First, check your figures. As a percentage of war dead against population, Canada had .40 vs. the United States .32. Second, the Canadians were fighting in the war years before the Americans came into it. Not finest hour? Tell that to the Dutch who were liberated by Canadian soldiers! Third, you say that "commie Canadians" did not want to go to Alaska. In fact a brigade of soldiers was sent to the Aleutians, but did not see action. The Terrace Mutiny was not about Alaska AT ALL but about going overseas generally as the Home Defense Divisions were forbidden by law from being sent overseas. Still, 45,000 Canadian soldiers gave their lives. Instead of saying "GFY" and being an ignorant blowhard perhaps you could try giving thanks for EVERY soldier who gave his life for us. As a Canadian let me say "Thank you American soldiers...thank you for volunteering your life for my freedom adn the freedom of my daughters". P.S., you are still a jackass and I will probably go back to banning your dumb ass.
