So happy birthday to me. Although there is nothing "special" about being 36, I must admit being a little sad the last few days. I think it started when I was doing some investigation for a case in a cemetery. It struck me how fleeting life is and how quickly we all will be forgotten. Maybe our children will visit our grave. Maybe our grandchildren. Then we are gone. I am another year older. To cheer up, I left work and went dipnetting by myself. Got three very nice fish. 6 nice meals for us. The chickens get the spines. The hogs get the heads and guts. Everyone is fed. A lazy night for me. Will deal with the fish, some beer I made and just hang out. A long weekend for the Fourth of July but the many people in the office are gone, so a quiet weekend too. Have a good holiday.

Happy Birthday Ben. This is truly a great Alaska Independence Day. Sarah Palin gives us our freedom from her crazy ass trip, now America can have her. "Once you ride first class, coach sucks".

Happy Birthday, Ben. BTW, did you hear the good news about Palin quitting? If she becomes president, which I doubt, but if she does, what do I need to do to practice in Canada? Will they even let me in? We've got a few years to plan...Just in case.

happy b-day ben. I'm still kicking it as a PD in the midwest (2 years as of may). I'm always thinking about relocating up there-you give a realistic perspective of what life is like up there, and i appreciate it. What would be the possible dealbreaker to me is the lack of sunshine in the winter. Anyway, what the hiring situation at the Alaska PD? Down here in the lower 48, the state and county gov't are really strugging (and I'm sure you know all about California's woes).

I know this may come as a shock to you anonymous, AK has a lot of public defenders, well assistant public defenders, and it seems as though they have similar interests and even post on eachother's blogs. This is the case to which you refer.

Ken, Hello my man - thanks for making me look like a dick! Come see me in FL

Hey Josh - waz up?
Angie, things are ok here. There was a hiring freeze but that was lifted. I really don't think the sumlight in the winter is that bad. You only get a few more months of 'darkness' than many parts of the lower 48 and you more than make up for it in the summer. I will be EXHAUSTED by October and looking forward to snow (I will deny ever saying that). It is not like we live in total darkness like Barrow or without direct sun like Whittier. Alaska has it's pro's and con's for sure. I have tried to outline them over the years.

Your journal will be treasured by your children and your descendants for generations. It's a nice gift you are giving them.
