So, I am going to do something that I should have done a long time ago. I am making this blog private. If you want to see it you can email me at btadams1@yahoo.com. I am allowed 100 readers and that seems like more than enough. I am leaving this up for a few days and then making it private. It is just not worth the stress anymore. Always watching what I am saying or what photos I put up because some people take it wrong. I was doing this for my kids and they will have it even if private. It is done. All of you people who complained and whined and didn't like my point of view..well you win.

So, I am back. I (literally) made a run to the border. No problems....got the new TN visa. We are good until March 2012. I am glad too...the stress of these trips cannot be good for me. It was a fun trip. We made it to the border yesterday. We were going to push on but the roads were about to turn icy so we stayed in Tok overnight.Had a fun time at the bar. It was a typical small town bar...within a few minutes we seemed to know everyone. It helped that we ran into another public defender who was from Tok. This morning we went to a dog sled race. All in all it was fun but I am glad to be home. It is snowing furously outside and all the melting we have had in the last few weeks is gone. If I was ever to leave Alaska it would be because of April. I mean really? Really? A new three inches of snow?

P.S. Upon request I removed the photo of me drinking out of a water bottle. Apparently some felt that I was drinking and driving. Ummm, no. It was meant as a joke but apparently there are wayyy…

So, I leave tomorrow for the border. My yearly quest for the holy TN visa. Except two things. First, the TN visa is now a 3 year visa. That is great news. Second, at the end of this visa (assuming it is granted and it is always nerve wracking) I am thinking of moving on. The main problem is this: I am in Tier 4 in the Alaska civil service. That means that my retirement is a 'defined contribution' instead of a 'defined benefit'. I have blogged about this before what what that basically means is that my retirement money is thrown into the stock market. What makes that worse is that government employees in Alaska do not contribute to social security. We all know the future is uncertain. But I don't like all of my retirement being in the market. What if in 30 or 40 years the market is going through what it is now? What if one of my account managers picks an Enron or a Madoff? I could work my whole life and end up eating dog food. No thanks. What makes it worse is th…

So, let me tell you one of the dumbest things about living in Alaska. People here tend to assume a person is correct based solely on the number of years they have lived here. So, for example, here is an example of a typical conversation in Alaska.

Man 1: The sky is green.

Man 2: No, it is blue.

Man 1: I have been here 14 years, how long have you been here?

Man 2: 3 years.

Crowd: Oooooooohhhhhh, the sky is green!

Take these pictures for example. Not the greatest quality I know. We had some people over last night and this show came on about Dick Proenneke. I said 'wow look at that sockeye salmon' (also known as a 'red'). Jesse claimed it was a 'pink'. All the others said 'well he would know, he has lived here longer than you'. Besides the fact that is just dumb, we all know there are no salmon in the waters of coastal British Columbia where I grew up. Only Alaska has salmon apparently. So now I have been called out. All my 'friends' were sure vocal when…

So this old gal wanted the hay that I am feeding the rabbits. Luckily she just didn't kick open the glass door and help herself. For scale the step ladder in the background is a 6 foot ladder. Even her hind quarters covered it! She just stepped over the 4 foot fence like it was nothing. Why is it that a moose like this killed my beloved Gromit while the little shi%s we have now can harass her and get off scot free? Despite the fact that was -10F when I went to work this morning, I brought the Rhino out yesterday. Kadee loves to drive. Everytime I grab the wheel to avoid a collision she grabs my arm and pulls it away. God she makes me laugh. I can't imagine raising these kids any other place. Talking about laughing, J unburied this car from the snow yesterday. Have you ever seen a more pure expression of joy?

So, in preparation for my trip to Victoria on May 21 (which I am incredibly excited about), I decided to join Facebook to look some people up. I'm going to admit it felt a little strange at first. But I am really, really glad I did. I found people that I haven't spoken to in years. Some I never thought I would get to speak to again. There were even people who I had left things unsaid with who I got to 'speak' to. My blog is linked and suddenly people who I haven't seen since high school can see my life. Most are interested to see I have two daughters. Interestingly, most don't ask why I am in Alaska. I guess I have always been an 'Alaskan'. I am writing this to actually encourage you to join. It was interesting to see people who I haven't seen in 10 or more years. You people have gotten old! I was struck by the bald spots, until I realized that mine is getting larger by the day too. So many lives in so many directions. Very, very cool. Otherwise no…

So, we are all sick. Sucks. It was 'just' a cold but it knocked us all down. To make matters worse I was in trial all week. Trial can be stressful enough but being sick really, really sucked. I beat the Assault 2 but lost on an Assault 3. I am very excited about the appeal. The details will bore anyone but an Alaska criminal lawyer but the State alleged this guy had used a fish bonker to crack open some guys skull. The problem is that the jury rejected that and found he only used his hands. Hands can only be a "dangerous instrument" in limited circumstances, which are not present. So we'll see. We have had a string of victories lately in our office. I suspect the DA's have stopped screening their cases very carefully. There is NO excuse for a DA to lose a trial. None. Especially when we are making reasonable counter-offers. Oh well. We will just keep doing trials and winning. Today we were feeling good enough for Kadee and I go down the road and get …
