So, a good Alaska day. Dug in the garden. The 4 inches of snow or so that fell yesterday is just about gone already, thank God. The vegetables I have started in a cold frame are sprouting and I am eager to be able to garden outside. Before anyone makes a stupid comment about why I wear a pistol while gardening, I'll stop wearing a gun when I stop seeing brown bears in my back yard.

There has already been one bear attack this spring (although the guy was a dumb ass). Then got to take Kadee for a Rhino ride. But most of all today, I got to enjoy of the newest Alaskans.

So, p.s. Here she is. Click on the second picture. See the look in Kadee's eyes? There is going to be trouble. But, god help anyone who ever messes with the Adams girls. They may fight with each other but they will put a hatchet in the back whoever messes with her sister! I can see it already.

So, welcome to Alaska Alyssa Jaye! J went into labor last night about 7 pm and at 11:24 p.m. Alaska time, our daughter was born. There were no complications and, from my point of view, it seemed like an easy birth (J might disagree but she is doing great). J pushed 3 times in 20 minutes and she was here! Alyssa was 7 lbs and 14.5 ounces. She is 20 inches.

Kadee is not sure how to take it I think. Kadee is sleeping right now while J and Alyssa are at the hospital. Soon, I will go to the hospital and see my newest love. Some who know me joke that it is my penance to be surrounded by so many girls. Me? I wonder what I have done in prior lives to deserve to be surrounded by such beauty in this one. To Alyssa: I love you baby girl. Anything I can give you I will. I would lay down my life for yours. No matter what ever happens I am here for you and you can come to me. No matter the cost, no matter what the sacrifice might be, you are my blood and more important to me than you'll …

So, why do I love life in Alaska so much? It isn't just the magnificent setting, the outdoor activities or the wide open spaces. Sometimes, just sometimes, it is also the law. Like yesterday when the Court of Appeals ruled in State v. Brown, which can be found here: http://www.state.ak.us/courts/ops/ap-2157.pdf. When I lived in California, the courts and the legislature (at the urging of the people) were as busy as possible restricting the rights of the people. It was just awful. For example, in California one can never have more rights than those guaranteed by the federal constitution. The law is exactly the opposite in Alaska. The federal constitution is the floor on rights. So yesterday the court ruled on consent searches. It is beautiful. Based on the facts in that case the Court ruled that "the officer conducting the traffic stop was prohibited from requesting Brown’s permission to conduct a search that was (1) unrelated to the basis for the stop and (2) not o…

So, all I can say is my Rhino kicks ass. Good day. Getting stuck in water so deep my passenger bailed. Building a chicken house. Drinking whiskey. The sun is out and the dogs are shedding. God bless this place called Alaska! I can feel the happiness creeping back into me like the sun soaks into the soil.

So, in the grand tradition of Adams (partial) self-sufficiency we now have 40 chicks in our spare shower. The damn weather here has been too cold to keep them in the shop so they are inside. I'm sure my mother will get a kick out of that. Remember the time we had that blizzard in Victoria and I had all those chicks and ducks in the bathtub? They were in there far too long and stank like hell but it was impossible to put them outside. Kadee is obsessed with them. Who knows? By the time they are ready the economy of this country might be so far in the crapper that we are glad for them. These Cornish cross birds go from the size of an egg to a nice roasting bird of 8-10 lbs in about 8 or 10 weeks. That is, they did in California. It will be interesting to see how long they take in Alaska. Also, when they go outside everyone tells me that the bears will be on them like Oprah on a baked ham. I can't imagine raising my girls in the city. Grow chicks grow. The shotgun will be by…

So, happy birthday Kadee! Hard to believe that it has been 2 years. 2 years since I stood in that hospital room and cried my eyes out over you. You are still the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. This time next year your sister will be here and my life will be a sea of pink. To be honest, I couldn't be happier.

So, all I can say is that I love Alaska. I really, really do. Like someone emerging from a coma, where my waking thoughts seem to be an extension of the dream. It is days like today I hope will flash before my eyes when my time comes. P.S. Happy Birthday Kadee! Tomorrow it is has been two years since the best thing that ever happened to me came along. My love for you makes everything pale in comparison, even this great big land called Alaska. I love you baby girl.

So, summer is COMING!!!!! To celebrate, have been preparing all day for a big trip to Ninilchik beach to clam tomorrow. Spent money I don't have on this trailer to move the Rhino (and other things). Am kegging some booze and marinating some rib eyes bought by another of the paticipants. Taking the Rhino and another ATV down to beach along with a bunch of firewood, meat and booze. Eleven of us are going and it should be a good party. My only regret is that J and Kadee are not coming. J has her reasons but I am still looking forward to the time when the family can do these things. Should be a great party. P.S. This may be the moose that killed Gromit. I could blow her brains out with a .22 at this range. Am tempted, but no. Need proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

So, I have a doppelganger. This is NOT me, but it sure looks like me. Does anyone out there know who this creepy little fella is?
