So, this little girl is going to have more tough in her little finger than we have in our whole body. What a way to grow up. J and Kadee came out on the boat for the first time today. Went up and down the Kenai river (up to the bridge anyways)and out into Cook inlet. Other than 2 blown hoses (which we fixed with tape) all was well. The weather is beautiful. The firewood is in and the wood stove is installed. The freezer is full. We are going to enjoy the rest of summer while we can.

So, victory! The boat works. 5 months and thousands later, it works. And it works great! Nothing else is new in my life. Oh one thing. J is pregnant. Learned yesterday. Here we go.

So, like so many others I have been watching Ice Road Truckers on the History Channel. This show makes me a little sad I must admit. I guess it makes me sad for a few reasons: first, sometimes I just miss Canada. I had hoped that moving to Alaska might alleviate some of that. Although (as you know) I love it here, living in Soldotna is really no different than any other place in America. Maybe it just the wanderer in me, but I will not live here forever. Too many damn people. Too much civilization. Hearing the voices of the truckers reminds me of the people I grew up with and the people I miss. The show makes me think of my older brother the most. I don't get to see him much and I miss him a lot. Those truck drivers often remind me of him, and in a way, I am with him when I watch the show. Second, I sometimes regret the life I chose. Generally I love being a Public Defender. But, for my luck (as I have written about before) I would have ended up as a heavy duty mechanic. Lived in …

So, I have been thinking lately that I made a mistake moving to the Kenai Peninsula. I love Alaska but this place is something else. Here's an example. Last night, as usual, we went to get wood. Except this time I blew a tire. It was about 7:30 p.m. I couldn't get a replacement so I pulled the trailer well off the road. Well off. This morning I got a new tire and at about 8:45 a.m. I was heading towards the trailer when I saw it on the back of this truck. It turns out the trailer I had borrowed to get wood had been impounded by the State Troopers at 2 a.m! There are way too many cops here and they have nothing better to do I guess. The tow driver was pissed because he had gone out at 2 am for no reason. He agreed the trailer was way off the road and posed no danger. But not too pissed to charge me $308 for a 5 mile tow. I had to pay because it was a borrowed trailer. The Agency is having each office keep track of our "stupid" cases so when we get together in October …

So, its hot. Damn hot. Funny how 75 degrees is so hot. Not getting firewood tonight as everyone agrees is just too hot. I'm not really sure how I lived in California for so long. Because at 75 degrees, I am uncomfortably warm. So time to get berries instead.

So, not a lot to say really. Just really busy cutting wood...am up to maybe 2 and a half years worth. Also busy finishing the butcher shop in anticipation of moose season in a few weeks. The season actually opens on August 20 but I won't be a resident until September 1, so they'll have to wait for my bullet. I lost a road kill the other night when I didn't answer the phone at 1:30 a.m. Damn. Didn't know they had road kills in August. Oh well...am ready for moose season. .300 win mag is dialed in, butcher shop is functional and gear is getting organized. As for work , there is not a lot going on. Many of my trials have settled and I think that is just part of practicing law in Kenai in the summer. I hope in the next few weeks as G comes down and we go on my first Alaska moose hunt, I'll have more to write about. As for now, it is 10:30 p.m. and I'm going to go finish cutting wood.

So, the thought at this time of year in our house is wood, wood, wood. We get a load of wood every night after work and got a couple this weekend. On Tuesday I expect we will have enough for the winter of 2008/2009. Then we will keep going. I would like 3 years of wood ready to cut and split. It will be my winter activity. I like working in 0 degrees a lot more than 60 anyways. Even though I live in California for 6 years, Iwant to die from the heat when it gets to 72 now. If we do it now, next summer we can (maybe) boat and fish and all that (especially as Kadee will be old enough come along). It is funny how when you live in Alaska, you never stop thinking that winter will be here soon. Thank God too. The tourists here are driving me nuts. Quite frankly if I had known how big Soldotna gets in the summer I might not have moved here. ARRRGGGGHHH. The only other thing of note is that Kadee did something super cool today. We have started picking raspberries for my (soon to be) famou…

So, three things really fast. First, the bridge. God that makes me mad. The country has hundreds of billions to spend on an unnecessary war but can't keep a crumbling infrastructure together? I really don't like the government so when it purports to do something (like maintain a bridge) to the exclusion of the private sector, then it should bloody well make sure people driving home don't end up in the river. Heads should roll. Second, the boat motor is f*&%ed again. This is the third motor since April. Sigh. At least the mechanic is fixing it without charge. But I am losing the Alaskan summer fast. I am just trying to laugh through the frustration. Third, I have decided to take a big step and ban someone from leaving comments on my blog. There is one jackass who constantly leaves stupid little mean spirited comments. I like debate. I like it when people challenge my view of the world. But this person has nothing useful to say. I can't say I am really bot…
