So, I got a health care bill today. I was asked a question in a comment the other day: why do Alaska State benefits suck so much? Well here is an example. The bill was for $403.
The State contributed $2.02. $2.02. I am not kidding. Gee thanks. I think the deductible is like $125,221,454,955 or something. It is basically like having catastrophic insurance. But the incredibly stupid thing is that the State pay $830 a month for my health insurance. I pay another $60 PLUS pay the bills. Wow. Someone working for the State sold the employees right down the river. I paid $236 a month in California and the benefits were comparable. But almost $900 a month for this crappy plan? Furthermore, the State has all kinds of exclusions that DO NOT count towards your deductible. Like going to the doctor more than once a year. I am not kidding. If it is excluded all the money you spend say, going to the doctor, does not count towards your deductible. Try having a kid that needs shots, well…

So, check out my new boat. 1978 Silverstreak river boat. 24' feet of pure fishing and hunting power. It now belongs to me. And AlaskaUSA Federal Credit Union. God they suck by the way. I am getting a brand new Olds 455 put in and a bunch of other work done on it. I am then going to re-finance it. My payments right now are twice what I expected them to be. After the hell that bank put me through, I am not letting them keep the loan. I am hoping to have it on the water by mid may. I spent $7000 on the boat and am spending another $9000 on repairs an upgrades (like rod holders, downriggers etc.). Somethings I am doing myself, like re-carpeting the interior. Look at the 1970's carpet in there.

But when I am done I will have a boat worth $20K plus I am told. I have almost no experience boating and want to be safe. With the brand new motor and all brand new electronics (already in), I should be good to go.

This boat is a jet boat and will go in water as shallow as 12 inches deep. It w…

So, life in Alaska continues unabated. Sometimes it still doesn't feel real that I am here. My biggest regret is all the time I spent in California. I remember in law school thinking of coming to Alaska. I also remember Jeremy said it was "too isolating". I listened to him and went to California. So, I blame him. I have punished him with nine months of dial-up internet access (meaning no video games), which will end within weeks. We continue to chop wood for next winter. I'll be damned if I am spending "fishing time" chopping wood. Even though we enjoy wood chopping, the Alaska summer is coming. I am having a very hard time at work these days. After going full stink for 7 months, the combination of a lower case load and the nice weather makes me feel on edge. I am restless at work. Even bored (which is not for lack of work). Lately, sometimes I just have to skip out of work for an hour or so and go down to the river (don't worry State I make it up). Tod…

So, just wanted to show you the new house. Not our dream home but with the medical bills for my healthy family (the State of Alaska has the crappiest medical plan EVER for its employees by the way...the crappiest EVER), the new boat, other expenses and the $20,000 I lost on the house in California, it is the best we can do. The current place is rented out for a year. It is not a bad place actually. A few blocks from the Kenai river (the world's best sportfishing river) and the seller says there is a great Red salmon hole right by the house. It has a guest cabin/workshop (the one with the chimney).

It also has a 3 car carport. One "port" is completely enclosed and it will be 1/2 butcher shop and 1/2 brewery.
The other two will keep the snow off the cars next winter. I will not have the shop that I wanted but I will have a workshop. The house was built in 1982 is 1644 square feet (not including some bonus rooms under the house where my office and gun room will be), on .96 ac…

So, since I'm putting my cards on the table, let me tell you something else: I am a strong personal supporter of the death penalty. Professionally I have my concerns, but on a personal level I believe that there are some people who should just die. Unfortunately, I think that many States misapply the death penalty. This ultimate punishment should not be meted out to the man who kills a store cleark in a botched robbery. Not given out for "mere" rape or "child molestation", although there are many who feel that it should. All of those crimes may be horrible but in most cases prison is enough of a punishment for those criminals in my mind. No. The death penalty must be reserved for men like John Couey. If you have a sensitive stomach STOP READING NOW! This is the scum that, while high on crack and alcohol, kidnapped 9 year old Jessica Lunsford right from her own bedroom. Raped her. Stashed her in his closet. Then, not knowing what to do next, told her that he &qu…

So, today a terrible tragedy occurred at Virgina Tech University, where a lunatic shot 32 people. Some jackass left a comment today that I must be sympathetic to this madman. Nonsense. Just because I am a public defender or a self-professed gun nut does not mean that I support this violence. In fact I cringe more than those who are already anti-gun. Oh God, not again. But my solution to the problem may offend some, so if you are involved in this tragedy I suggest you turn away now. Here is the problem: many people are about to suggest that the answer to such slaughter is yet more gun control. As you might expect, I disagree. I have two reasons. First, I suggest part of the solution is more guns. Second, I am shocked how people easily people were killed. Here are my thoughts. If even one of the victims of this shooting had been armed I do not believe that it would have gone as far as it did. Do you notice how these shootings now occur at schools? Have you wondered why? All schools, to …

So, I just had to comment on this whole Duke Lacrosse player thing. For those of you that don't know, these were three young men who were falsely accused of sexual assault. I have said it before and will say it again: ANY man can be accused and convicted of child molestation, rape or domestic violence without any damn proof at all. The difference in this case is that the DA has admitted these three were "innocent". That is so remarkable because every DA I know would rather put his testicles in a bear trap than admit someone is "innocent". Everyone is guilty of something. The police don't make mistakes. What I hope is that everyone realizes how scary this case is. But for circumstances these three innocent men might spend most of the rest of their life in jail. The next time you are clamoring for "tougher laws" remember it might be your kid looking at life for a first time offense, even assuming he is guilty. A lawsuit is not enough in this case…

So, I had the best flight(s) of my life today. Had to fly from Kenai to Anchorage for a class on immigration law. Here is how it went. I walked up to the counter. The guy: name? Me: Adams. Guy: flight is a little late but we should get you there on time. Me: Ok. Minutes later I walked onto the plane. I didn't even show ID. I wasn't searched. I wasn't treated like Osama because I wanted a bottle of water. There were no metal detectors, no wands, no dogs or soldiers. There was no door on the cockpit and the co-pilot gave the safety announcement through the open door. On the way back from Anchorage it was almost as good. However, I did have to show my ID before boarding. Bastards. But, once again, no searches. It was like stepping back in time. I am actually loathe to write about this because somewhere some jackass will probably work to end this freedom if made aware of it. For me, the worst part of flying is the whole BS of taking my shoes off, being "puffed" f…

So, Happy Birthday Kadee! You know, when I learned I was going to have a girl, I was very sad. I was crushed in fact. I wanted a boy so bad. Now, a year later, I can't imagine my life without her. She is the light of both our lives. I can't imagine what I would do if someone ever hurt her. I am thankful that J gets to stay home and is such a great mom. I have always felt that daycare is stupid...in fact I get angry just thinking about daycare. I am fully aware that some people say they have to have two incomes. But I also know that most people who say that just don't live within their means. And I know that once you deduct the cost of daycare, clothes, gas, lunches etc. the amount left over for most people is hardly worth having a stranger raise your childrem, even if they are NOT sexually or physically abusing or even just neglecting them. Rather than give a tax break for daycare, the feds should make it more financially possible for parents to stay home with tax incentiv…

So, Happy Easter! P.S. Kadee took her first steps without falling at 8:24 p.m. Alaska time today. Tomorrow is her first birthday! Party at noon.

So, let me tell you two things about Alaska law. One is good and one is bad. First, the good. You are allowed to bait black bears here. I will never convince those opposed to any hunting that this is good. But for hunters, it makes sense. Black bear populations are healthy enough to allow reasonable levels of hunting. And killing the big boars is what makes the most sense. Big boars kill cubs. Big boars have the most meat and the biggest hides. ONe of the reasons why baiting makes so much sense is that it allows a hunter to carefully consider his target. Bears, unlike deer, moose etc do not have a readily visible indicia of sex. A hunter has to be more careful. No one wants to gun down a sow with cubs. It is illegal and immoral unless done in defense of life or property. When done right (and lawfully) a hunter in a tree stand can look at the bear and make damn sure it is not only the bear he wants but a boar. The number and regulations regarding baiting are substanial. Some people f…
