So we want to visit my brother over Christmas. Can't. Will be trapped in first picture instead of visiting him and his family (second picture). My roommate of 2 years just gave notice and will be out within a week. I am a lawyer but without a roommate I can't make it. Mainly because of medical bills. The baby is costing my about $500 a month and will for some time. At least a year. After a $2300 mortgage, $500 in medical bills, that leaves about $1200 for car payment, insurance, power, gas, TV, internet, phone, food, animal food, automobile gas, etc. So no visiting Canada this year. I want my boss to start pay family benefits but who knows? As long as the US government takes 20 years to make a simple decision, I will live on credit cards.

So we visited our friend Brian in Ukiah this weekend. We hung out with him and another friend, Steve (the "cheap bastard") Gomes. Actually, I'll have to tell the story sometime about why I can't call him that anymore. They are both great guys and to be honest they were the hardest part of leaving Ukiah. We miss them and visit as often as we can. We told them about Alaska and they were supportive, which is nice. I told them about the Deuce and why I bought her and they couldn't believe it. So I posted another pic of her. Yes it is scary. But from here to Bellingham and then from the port in Alaska to whatever town we choose shouldn't be too bad.

We went up to Gomes new 880 acre ranch. Simply stunning. Forgot the digital camera but pics were taken with regular cameras and I'll be putting up pics soon. Brian and I hunted pig but didn't see any. The place is crawling with deer, pig, bear and other wildlife. By "ranch" I mean undi…

So our plan is to sell out of California, take the equity and buy a piece of land in Alaska. The more I think about it, the more I really miss the ocean. Maybe it is the fact that I was born on an Island. So a piece of land near or on the ocean would be great. We want a log house. Imagine this: a log house is in the center of the picture. Off to the left, via a totally enclosed walkway, is the pool house. We really want an indoor pool. The picture above makes me drool. Make it tropical. Off to the right, via a longer enclosed walkway is a covered riding arena (like the one above). At one end of that are the stalls, pens etc. Finally, off to the back, (again via enclosed walkway) is the shop. Hence, no matter how dark and cold it is outside one could swim, ride or work in the shop without going outside. I love the idea. All of this makes sense in Fairbanks but less so on the coast. The enclosed walkways wouldn't cost that much (I don't think) and when it's 6…

After almost a year we finally got the "Luxury". Doesn't look like much now, I must admit. We lived in it about 3 months before we moved here. Loved it. It is a 35 foot trailer with a bedroom, bathroom (including shower), kitchen and living room. We are going to paint it to match the house, paint the inside, build a deck, hook up power and water and put trellis around the bottom. Maybe plant some shrubs. It will be a great little guest quarters, as we have a two bedroom house and a roommate. If the baby gets too much at night, I can retreat to the Luxury for a good night sleep. We are going to put a Queen bed in there, some pots, pans and the like and towels, soaps etc. I still have some from the "Bellagio" in Vegas. Nice. Figure we got about 3 or 4 months to get it stylin. I'll post pics as we do it.

On another note, I got a really snotty comment on here about how I don't have any right to complain about California becuase I am taking &qu…

So I have got back into brewing. I used to do it in Canada a lot where the cost of a case of beer requires a second mortgage and a blood transfusion. Now got back into it just to do it. I think I like brewing it as much as drinking it. The unenlightened think my kitchen looks like a meth lab. By the way, I hope that Alaska is not the sea of methamphetamine that California is. I started with the kits again but am now fully into the grains and malts. Now, I am making some goooood beers. At least, from what I read, I can continue to homebrew in Alaska. Will be easier too when it isn't 105 every damn day. Is 85 here today. 85. Towards the end of October. It just isn't natural.

Julianne continues to do well and grow. It looks like we will be having a girl. We haven't had the scan yet so it is not for sure but the heartbeat is 160. The OB/GYN says that in his experience, a 160 heartbeat is consistent with a girl. From asking around, that seems right. To be hones…

So my buddy Jeremy and I went to a Free State to celebrate the discovery of America. Anyplace is more free than California. We went to a machine gun shoot. Awesome. Simply awesome. Look at the smile on the guy in red next to me when I was shooting the 1919. Even though hundreds of thousands of rounds were being shot I made that guy laugh. I aimed at an old school bus and refused to take my finger off the trigger while screaming "they are cominggggggg". I have never seen so many happy people as dozens of machine guns were fired, a mini gun fired and a grenade launcher went "poof" every few minutes. A machine gun shoot is a sure cure for depression I bet. Yes, we burned through $400 in ammunition but we shot an AK-47, an uzi, an M-16, a Tommy gun etc. We didn't use the flame thrower but it was pretty cool too. Jeremy taught me to play Texas Hold'em (with his money which was nice) and we drank whiskey and played cards til 3 am. Good times. I thi…

Our new little dog (David) that we are considering (--we are just watching him to see if we like him and can he make it in Alaska?) got stung by a bee yesterday. We got a freezer full of meat that we fed to the dogs and the pigs. The meat bees are terrible right now and fight us all for the meat. David lost and Julianne had to comfort him. I wonder if there are meat bees in Alaska. Finally got cooler today. In 70's. I love watching www.arcticcam.com and watching Fairbanks. Is 36 degrees there today. A man can work in that weather. Maybe enjoy life.

Have resigned myself to thought that we might be here for years. If I don't accept that fact I might go crazy. But to keep myself sane I need to go to Alaska and pick a place. Then I do whatever needs to be done and I will buy a piece of land there. And wait. I do miss the Ocean a lot and am thinking about Kenai or a place on the water. The ocean in California has a diffrent flavor than up north...muted somehow. Wo…
